Message I am currently having a very similar problem. My car was having issues with over heating after a 120K timing belt swap including a new water pump and thermostat. One night my car was blowing white smoke out of a little hole that had formed in plastic inlet tank right under the radiator cap. I pulled over and waited a couple of hours and added some water to the radiator. But that wasn't a good idea because shortly after my car spurted steam upward from where the radiator cap sits. I waited awhile longer and drove it to a near by arco where i added anti freeze. That was enough to get me home but as soon as i pulled into my driveway my car began to blow white smoke from under the hood again. I ended up having the radiator rebuilt only to find out the radiator was clogged with white paste like stuff. Soo after all that my car was good until now. It has begun to overheat almost exactly how u have described. Every time i check the radiator in the morning there is no visible liquid in there. So i add water to it only to find the next time i check there isn't anything in there. Can't seem to figure out what it is but the head gasket does seem like a good place to start. Anyways though i hope you find out whats wrong and it isn't too bad.
