Subject Repairing the Brake Light Relay

The brake light relay sends power to the Z's 3 brake lights. My relay has been bad for a while now causing the third brake light to go out. Got a replacement off Ebay, then decided to crack open the old one to see how hard it is to fix. Turns out to be super easy.


The relay is located inside the driver's side light panel in the trunk. It's the green box on the right in this photo:


Using a thin flathead pry both sides of the black cover and pop it off.


The circuit board inside slides out.


Check for broken solder where the connector is attached to the board. Vibrations over the years had caused cracks. I went ahead and re-soldered all 4 connections (circled in red) even though only one was broken.


Put it back together and you're done. Can't believe I drove around for over a year without doing this simple repair.
