Message	as said, from your description you could have an issue with the gauge. but just to be clear, there are two water temp sender units on the front water pipe. One for the gauge (and only the gauge, with one prong) and the other for the ECU temp measurements, that is the one that controls the way the car runs. worth checking bot of then for corrosion and good contact. best of luck.
