Message Wondering if you guys can shed some light on a fuel smell problem I have. I have a 91TT with 104k on it. It's basically bone stock, never hit, and taken care of. After driving heavy on the throttle I can smell a strong fuel smell in the car and under the hood. I have read the FAQ regarding tightening clamps, all clamps are tight. The smell is coming from the fuse block area on the drivers side inner fender. There are no visible leaks and my mileage doesn't seem bad. The fuel damper and regulator are dry and I have no idle problems. A friend told me this may be coming from the charcoal canister. I haven't looked at the canister yet, but I am wondering if this is a common issue. I passed a smog with flying colors including a lead down test about 2 years ago and 3k miles ago. I don't smell fuel when driving easy, only during higher rpms.
My friend was telling me there is a vacuum switching valve that should close off the can from positive pressure when boosting or that there maybe a crack. The can is plastic and 21 years old so anything is possible. By the way, the tank holds pressure with the gas cap on, although I know there are 2 sides to the canister. Normally the tank is under vacuum until the turbos create positive pressure in the plenum, then I'm not sure what happens.
Thanks guys!
PS I was bummed I couldn't make it to zcon
