transmission, or the wiring from it. You can pull the speed sensor out and test the output to see if it's working or not. It's kind of a pain since you need to drop the catalytic converters to be able to pull the sensor out of the tranny. But once it's out, it's easy to test by spinning the plastic gear and reading the voltage generated between the connector leads. The other thing it might be is the speedometer connections in the guage cluster itself, as the soldering is known to break down with age. Ask me how I know. But, I was thinking the P/S won't work in that scenario, and it will work if it's the speed sensor that's the culprit.
