The ECU cannot alter your physical timing, since it is based on a physical relationship between hardware and the CAS trigger mechanism. The ECU assumes that the base physical timing is accurately set and adjusts electronically from there. So if you want to "fool" the ECU, you can adjust your base timing and everything else is adjusted correspondingly. Or conversely, leave base timing alone and adjust the ECU timing to electronically achieve the same result (more or less).
