Message	sounds like a leak. If your "bump" theory is correct, it's a physical problem, maybe a fuel line connection or damage. Strong fuel smell indicates gas is leaking. This is just a guess, but it's quick and easy to do. If you get no gas on towels, then drive the car until it stops and look again.
