Main reason to having an accurate boost gauge is to keep things in check, you wouldn't know of over boosting conditions on the stock inaccurate gauge. In your words, yes, an electronic boost gauge with built in warning would notify you of over boost conditions. The knock sensor picks up vibrations mostly caused by detonation. Not all cases of higher boosting will cause detonation, but can cause damage on a vehicle without the supporting mods to run higher boost. (AKA a stock 370cc, stock intercooler, stock ECU map Z running anything 18psi as an example.) Yes everyone adds new gauges to their cars, but what percentage of those people do it to look cool vs. having it for legitimate reasons?
