I wouldn't worry about tearing it apart to set the tensioner again myself. A lot of the gap after you have run the motor is determined by where the motor stops. I could start and stop my motor four or five times and have a gap anywhere form 2 mm to four mm depending again on where the motor stops. I bet if you could observe the tensioner with the motor running, it is probably fine, but since you can't, turn the motor backwards about a half a turn with a breaker bar and socket. That will tell you where your gap actually is as it will open back up to where you set it. As far as your timing, yeah, you gotta set it. Borrow a timing light from someone.
