Excessive detonation can/will cause wrist pin damage. In a floating pin bore, the pin being stuck and not allowed to move/spin in the bore will cause damage to the pin and or piston. Significant side load will damage the pins when running as well.
Symptoms usually aren't detectable until the pin itself finally gives way. When that happens the engine is down for the count.
