Message	with the gauge could be as simple as a cracked boost sensor hose as Medallion suggests. Common for the hose to dry out and split over time at the connection point on the sensor. Can't recall where it is located on the 85, but on the 90zx it is a small rectangular box attached to firewall near drivers fender. Hose to it is a 4mm hose I think.
