The clutch makes contact with the face of the flywheel, while the starter engages the ring gear (the teeth on the outside of the flywheel). If the starter only occasionally grinds, it means either the starter is going out and won't fully engage the teeth on the flywheel sometimes, or the flywheel has some damaged teeth, so it grinds only when those teeth happen to be lined up with the starter. Your clutch slip could simply be a pedal adjustment issue, which there is a FAQ for around here somewhere.
