Message still usable. I don't think whatever the clay bar removes can scratch the paint once embedded in the clay bar unless it's a large piece of something hard that the clay pulled off (not overspray). Depending on the level of contamination I can usually get several cars out of a single piece of fine clay, so your one hood will not use up your clay unless it's already falling apart.

As for lube, I usually use whatever cheap quick detailer is around (Meguiar's usually). I don't know about alcohol but some folks use straight water; the catch is that you have to be constantly spraying to keep the surface wet or else the clay can get grabby. Certain soaps and things will actually break down the clay so be careful if you try a homebrew clay lube.
