Message	so resistor. Would be a good idea to add another regular diode (1n1004 or similar) in series with the red LED. That 2nd diode acts as reverse polarity protection should the + and - car connections get reversed by accident when connecting the test light to the car. I'd stay away from the white or blue super bright type LEDs - they tend to be a little more static sensitive and more easily damaged in a test environment....
