You do not need to source a pool of brake fluid to have a condition wherein air is being sucked into the system and creating air bubbles in the hydraulic line. It takes a very small pocket of air to collapse the pressure, and that amount of air could easily displace an equal amount of fluid by backing up into your brake cylinder reservoir. Ergo, the condition goes unnoticed... except for the obvious drop in line pressure and loss of clutch function.
