Message I just went through this starting up my rebuilt engine 4 days ago. A search will yield different opinions, but it seemed the consensus was to remove the fuel pump fuse and spark plugs and spin the engine with the starter. This is so the load is minimized against your bearings while there is no oil there.

I did this and allowed the engine to spin for approximately 20 seconds and still had no pressure. I then decided to use the shop vac method to pull oil into pump to allow it to produce it's own suction. I took a clear plastic tube about 3/4" diameter and taped it to the vac hose. Next removed the oil filter inserted the hose up the oil filter tree. Make sure the tube is in the banana shaped opening to the side and not the center location since the side opening leads to the pump and the center leads to the block. I then taped over the center hole and the overall filter tree so the vac could draw a vacuum. There is a better, but more complicated tool that you can make that is described elsewhere on TT.net, but my tape and tube trick worked for me.

I assume the oil pump is a positive displacement as the vac wont do anything unless the pump is spinning. So I had my son Jude, who is sitting next to me and delighted to get credit for his help, turn on the vac and watch for oil in the clear tube while I spun the engine. It only took a few second to draw oil through the pump and into the vacuum. Then reinstall the filter, full of oil, and spin the engine again. Took about another 5 seconds or so to see pressure on the gauge. It was a great sight to see.

Good luck.
