OP, was it actually oil leaking or just broken down black tar? If it is actually leaking oil, that means that the plastic cap on the back of the solenoid has broken. This could worsen quickly, as the plastic cap is the stop for the solenoid pintle and gets impacted every time the solenoid disengages. It is very possible that the old broken down potting compound looked like oil to you tough. Either way you should take a look at your solenoids. Here is Platupus' post showing the extent of what can happen. He did find some better designed solenoids, but they are kind of hard to get ahold of. Here is the installation instructions for installing the caps. You can install them either with the motor out, or by pulling the valve covers and solenoids.
