Subject	Visually inspect water and oil pump?

Message	My motor had just over 100,000 miles. I am rebuilding it and will be installing the oil and water pump soon. Generally, should these parts be replaced while they are off or is there a way to visually inspect them? They seem pretty basic in function, but would hate to have to pull them anytime soon :)
