Message tight enough. I would guess that the WD40 didn't stop the slipping, but just stopped the noise by lubricating it, which is counter-productive. Not sure how you're determining that the crank is working harder, but the belt needs to be very tight. This is a common problem on these cars. Also, if the belt is squeeking, then stops when it warms up, that tells you the belt is almost tight enough.
