Message Since R12 is tough to get and R134a is supposedly going to be phased out as well from what I've heard I wanted to ask some questions about alternative refrigerants.

I've been told that there are some people who run mixes of propane (R290), isobutane (R600a), etc as refrigerants because they are easy to obtain and theoretically work even better than R12. Lots of people say this is a horrible idea due to the obvious flammability and explosive possibilities which may occur using these as refrigerants. From what I've read R12 is non-flammable and R134a can be flammable if it comes in contact with the atmosphere.

I can't say I know much about the chemical makeup of the refrigerants so I'm hoping someone here knows for sure. The way I see it, if R12 is phased out and R134a is already potentially flammable in some cases then why not just skip it and run the other stuff that works better?

A random sources I found with info:

This is all just for the sake of conversation. Personally I'll probably just run whatever is the current norm when I actually get around to re-installing my AC system.
