Message I posted this on 3ZC while TT.net was down. I hate visiting that site but I needed a fix while TT was unavailable. I've updated this post taking into account some of the responses.

I've been without A/C for a while because I did some maintenance and found my compressor leaking at the front seal. While I had my engine out I figured I would replace the compressor with a spare.

My car has been converted to R134a and worked good before I swapped compressors. So I finally got it all hooked up today and leak checked the system under vacuum for 15 minutes using a Robinair AC machine. Leak check passed with no issues. So I refill the system with 10% less R134a as I've seen posted which came in at 1.62 lbs. I started the car and watched the A/C pressure gauges. The high side pressures started to climb as normal, low side dropped. I was getting cold air in the cabin. Then I checked the gauges again since I never heard the clutch kick off. The pressures kept climbing up to ~400-450psi and then I immediately turned the car off. I let the pressures equalize on both sides. I thought maybe 10% less that the R12 was too much. So I dropped it to 25% less than the R12 spec or 1.38lbs and started the car again. Again cold air, but the high side kept climbing.

I thought maybe the high pressure switch might have failed which caused the compressor to run full time. The compressor never turns off. My understanding was the high/low pressure switches are in a single unit from what I could see in the FSM. I've also been told there is no high pressure switch. Can anyone confirm this? If there is one, is there a way to test it?

Another theory was the expansion valve could be plugged up, but the system was never open for any length of time. I simply swapped compressors. Everything is stock and evap core is clean, radiator is clean.

For the mean time I've left the system charged and I've pulled the 10A AC fuse. Any help with this would be great.

Thanks!
