need to jiggle the pickup around and I bet one you'll find a reading that puts the CAS in the middle. I did the same thing as you...had the CAS all the way to one side and figured I miscounted. I redid the belt and counted a million times, same problem. Flipped the pickup a few times, pulled it against the wire, and found a position that got a different reading and put the CAS in the middle. Mind you the timing light I used was probably 20+ years old.
