Message I've been without AC for a few years now, but it's finally getting to me and I want to fix it. Short story, I wrecked my 91 TT about 5 years ago and repaired it. The AC condenser was bent up (but still holding R12 freon), so I had to drain it first before installing a new condenser.

Today the car is all put back together and in good shape, but when I do a vacuum test on the AC system, I have a fairly significant leak. I have a bunch of cans of R12 stockpiled, so I'm not interested in switching to R134. But I'm trying to figure out how to detect my leak. Everything I've read tells me to fill the system with freon and dye, but even though I have extra, I'd prefer not to waste all that expensive R12 just to let it leak out into the air. Are there any other ways for me to find the leak without filling the system first?
