Message This was also one of my concern regarding the aftermarket systems. This link illustrates the suggested pipe diameters by engine displacement and horse power. If you look at the first column "Engine CID (Liter)" in either row one (2.5-3.3) or two (3.3-4.1) and cross reference it with either the 200 or 250 horsepower ratings in the "Horsepower" column you will find that for a Dual Exhaust the maximum suggested pipe diameter is 2.25 inches. I believe this is the actual diameter of the exhaust piping on the OEM system. While most aftermarket systems for the NA are 2.50 inches and TTs are 3.00 inches.

A larger diameter pipe would indeed increase horsepower, but at the expense of low end torque. Horsepower is a purely theoretical value for the amount of work that can be done in a given period. While it is torque that actually turns the wheels. All things being equal, an engine with a greater torque rating and lower horsepower will feel more powerful, and be more enjoyable to drive, than an engine with a greater horsepower rating and lower torque.

Anyone who has ever driven both a stock Z31 Turbo and a Z32 NA will notice this immediately. The Z32 has more horsepower than the Z31 (225 v. 200) but the Z31 has more more torque and therefore out powers the Z32.

Trailboss, thank you for bring this up and confirming one of my suspicions.
