Subject	Holes in lower intake, what are they for?

Message	Tearing down my dads engine for new injectors and saw that each port has a hole near the injector on the port wall. What exactly is it for? The casting is very rought around the hole and appears it may not be factory. If it is supposed to be there what is it for? My only guess would be to mix some air with the fuel spray?
