Message So, as part of my engine swap, I'm painfully removing everything from my dirty bay so I can paint it. It started with a rusted battery bracket which I removed and treated with a rust inhibitor. Now I have the bumper off, the headlights, most tubing, etc etc.

I'm down to I guess the airbag harness and the brake booster (still not sure on how to remove that one...).

Anyway, so I had a couple of simple questions that will hopefully have me avoid making some stupid mistakes.

1) There is some nasty, yet somewhat intact foam around the back of the headlight area. If that gets removed as I've seen almost everyone take off for painting...then what gets put back on? A generic foam strip?

2) I could sand most surfaces with 300-600 grit, but someone said brake cleaner works well for cleaning and prepping metal prior to paint. Is this true?

3) I'm assuming the brake clean might be a nice last step, but is that what is recommended as a degreaser to keep reapplying? I'm trying to remove all of the dirt and oil and it seems like each pass with a paper towel (the blue shop variety) comes back somewhat dirty.

As I said, any basic advice would be great. I searched the tech support and came back with so many different threads and opinions, but most had broken picture links and made it confusing to follow.
