...do it with the plenum off. Does not matter. Definitely irrelevant as to whether the engine is warm. He's probably trying to just determine he in fact has compression. Can even be done manually cranking while the thing is sitting on an engine stand. In various ways...as in, no lifters, no cams even in stalled in the heads, etc. There can be reasons you might want to actually do that! Been there, done that. Good way to prove the nature of your compression problem if you've got one.
