Message finally breaking in my motor

I rebuilt my engine the end of last year using wiseco .020 over pistons. After having to replace clutch, cas and ptu I finally got to go for a test drive today for the first time in 17 months. I let it warm up and adjusted timing to 14 degrees btdc, burped the radiator/added distilled water. Oil pressure was good according to factory gauge.

After about 10 minutes of driving around my neighborhood a knock started all of a sudden. I put it in neutral and my rpm's were fluctuating from 1k to 2k were as before it was idling at 900 steady. I was only 1 block from home so i coasted back and parked. The whole drive today I watched my Apexi AVCR to make sure i stayed out of boost. Not boosting at all, staying under 3.5k rpm's.

One thing I noticed was the rear heater core hoses were not hot like no coolant had gotten to them. The front radiator hose was hot and when squeezing it felt like it had coolant in it.The thermostat I used was not oem but I boiled it in a pot checking with a temp gauge to make sure it operated correctly before installing.

I fear the worst. Wouldnt a headgasket blow before I just all of a sudden develop a rod knock?

If you blow a headgasket would you have oil in the coolant as well as water in the crankcase? The dipstick shows only oil not milky at all.

Could a collapsed lifter be the problem? I "rebuilt" them per Ash's faq and they all pumped up.

Im so disgusted and disappointed right now. I followed the fsm to the T on every nut and bolt. I used oem bearings after mic'ing the journals and rods myself. I used oem engine gasket kit. My water pump and oil pump are 3 years old with less than 5k miles on them, New timing belt and tensioner all done by me so i know they are right.

Im not sure if i should just pull the motor again or put it on jackstands and drop the oilpan to inspect. Ive been very positive with this car even though its been down for so long but im really starting to wonder if Im cursed when it comes to this car.
