If your removing the tie rod end because its worn out then why would you worry about damaging it. Plus I was always under the impression that you didn't hit it on the threaded side because it would mushroom the end and prevent the nut from going back on. If you put the nut on and hit it with a hammer on the nut, preferably a dead blow hammer or at least some wood between the nut and the hammer it won't do that.
Correct me if i'm wrong on the damage but I do know the method doesn't harm anything on the threaded end.
