| check the ground points at the back of the plenum. There is a ground for the PTU back there, and forgetting to connect it will definitely toast your PTU. If you can't find any obvious shorts, and you've verified the grounds, you'll need to measure all the ECU wires for shorts. (PITA) 5A is high draw BTW. I usually hear of that kind of draw when the alt's diodes fail.
