Message bracket that's around the seal makes the job easy. I resealed it all around with RTV- Permatex Ultra Copper (excellent stuff).

Use some longer screws (from parts bin) to get the retainer bracket correctly "situated/started" on the re-install then use the normal shorter screws to complete.

For the lower half-moon seal and gaps on each side -- be sure those areas are fully cleaned/free of grease before applying any RTV. After cleaning I final prep with 90% isopropyl alcohol.

If your crank shaft is deeply scored from seal wear and can't be polished smooth. The seal can be set less deeply so it misses that spot. We are only talking like 1/16 of an inch or so -- no worries, seal will still sit properly in the retainer bracket and do its job. Had to do this on my car and no leaks in the 8 months since installed.

If you have to do this -- DON'T grease up the outer surface of the seal for the reinstall. You want to be able to tap the seal into place without it setting too deeply in the retainer ring. Before doing any of this -- eyeball how the old seal fits fully into the bracket and it will be obvious how deep the new one needs to go(ie., flush with the ring's surface).

PS - Always need to grease/lube the shaft too. Your seal should come with some grease already applied to the inner ring.

That's all the tips I have....
