Message and it appears that my fog lights are now actually working correctly according to the wiring diagram. In order for the fog lights to be ON you need three things.

1. The fog light switch must be ON of course.
2. The right head light must be ON.
3. The dimmer switch must be activated which is done when the head light switch is in position 1 or 2 (parking and ON) AND the low beams are ON. The natural state of the dimmer relay (no voltage to the switching side) is for the high beams to be ON. Power runs from the headlight relays to both the high beam and low beam and then each is connected to the double pole single throw dimmer relay.

So when I did my rewiring of the fog lights I simply corrected one action - item number 3.

There must have been a short in the wiring somewhere between the fog light switch and the dimmer relay where the wire was being grounded. The Left headlamp went out when I switched out the Right headlamp and turned them on to compare. Pure coincidence or it was already dead and I didn't notice it. I moved the wires around quite a bit in removing the fuse kick panel next to the clutch pedal because I thought I had blown a fuse. Of course the relays and fuses for the head lights are in the fuse box under the hood !

I have reread the write up and it is set up like this and it worked for a year on this 95 and I did it on my 93 as well and never had an issue. I can only surmise that either I can't read a wiring diagram correctly or there was something different electrically on the earlier model 300zx; or something else entirely. I did check the voltage on the switching side of the fog lamp relay and I am getting 12 volts with the key in the ACC position and the fog light switch ON both with the head lamps on and off. I am too confused now to think.

In order for the fog lamps to turn off when you use the high beams the fog light switch must go through the the dimmer switch but that would mean that the fog lights won't work with the head lamps off since the dimmer switch is only activated with the the head lamps/parking lights ON and the high beams OFF. But I am reading a potential difference; and the fog light rewire works for other people.

Argh!
