I had the classic 3rd to 4th gear grind on my original transmission. I was reading posts about the insert springs are usually the "root cause" of shifting problems. I split the transmission to see what was going on. All of the insert springs were missing for that gear. Split the case open:
Missing insert spring(s):
For reference an insert spring still in good shape:
The nice thing is that you don't even need to press any gears out to access and install the springs. Just had to move the the shift linkages and balk ring to install the new ones. Just took the Z out for a test drive. Drives smooth, can slam 3rd to 4th without any miss.
When you order your parts you will need three insert springs, new gaskets for the front and top cover, and a small tube of grey gasket sealer (the one where you can install into a caulk gun). Applying gasket sealer with the gun make things so much easier. A dowel punch set is needed to push out the roll pins on the internal shift linkage. The fix is so cheap I suggest you try this first before you bend over and fork out $1700+ for a new transmission. As you can see in the pictures the higher gears are not in the best of shape, but it still worked. I will take my spare trans apart this winter and do the same thing.
