The Car: 1991 Nissan 300ZX, 2+2, Non-turboThe Symptoms: 1. After the first time I start it for the day (typically in the morning) the car will reek of gasoline; however, the odor tends to subside after ~10-15min or when the car is driven later in the day. 2. When driving, it will "stutter." This behavior would be most comparable to suddenly lifting off the accelerator when driving at constant speed. The car decelerates and is quite "jerky" when this happens. The engine runs very rough and clearly sounds like something is "missing." However, it's not consistent and will only do it sporadically. 3. Sometimes it fails to start entirely. When the key is inserted it will crank but not fire. If the key is held to crank it continuously for ~20sec, it will usually fire but exhibit the problems described in #2 quite severely. Occasionally, it will fire immediately but subsequently die after running for less than 10-15sec. Work so far: Because of the gas smell and the ignition issues in general, I suspected a fuel delivery problem. I replaced the fuel filter but it had no effect. The car has only been filled with Shell V-Power premium fuel. The fuel level has not been run so low that it no fuel would be reaching the ignition. When I looked under the hood, it appeared that gas might be leaking from the DAMPER ASSY-FUEL area down onto the backside of the intake plenum (closest to the firewall) on the passenger side of the vehicle. This has been an incredibly frustrating problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to get this problem fixed. Thanks. Brandon
