Message I bought this car a few weeks ago from a kid who replaced the water pump and couldn't get the car started again. I put a new belt on and set the timing. Got spark and fuel but no take off. So got new cas, ptu, plugs, fuel inj, and still nothing. Did a compression test and zero. Pulled the upper manifold and valve covers. now i can see just about everything. Tried to crank it again and felt back pressure coming from the manifold. (Timing is dead on) Now i noticed there is alot of space between the upper lifters and the cam. a little over an 1/8 of an inch. The lifters should be constantly touching the cam. The only time these touched the cam is when the cam lobe would come around. It would pushe the valves down fine but when it cycled they never came up fully. Now pulled the cam and am cleaning all lifters, but to further test to make sure the valves aren't bent i am going to poor a little gas down each valve port and see if there is any leak by when I look in the spark plug hole.
Now if there isn't any leak by and i can manualy push on the valves to make the gas go to the piston, WHAT then?
Is it the oil pressure? i can clean the oil psi valves. Cams and lifters have no unusual wear. BUT and this is a BIG but, I noticed the car was VERY low on oil when i was looking at the lifter clearence. Now will that have anything to do with the lifters not fully up. Air in them? Not enough psi. The car had been sitting without moving for a few months. Valves could be dirty around the seats and not able to shut properly.
Any advice helps. thanks
