Message No, you are not destroying the engine if it is off a few teeth. I've calculated that you could be off up to 45* or more and you won't damage the valves.

As far as checking to the reference marks on the backing plates without dis-assembly, I've seen properly installed belts appear up to 1-1/2 teeth off. Doing the check will only tell you if you're obviously out of time, or if the problem may be elsewhere.

While the belt may be correct, did you properly set the tensioner? Are you absolutely positive that all of your intake tubes and vacuum lines are connected? Electrical connection clean and tight?
