Message OK, here is a real stumper for you Z gurus out there....
I recently discovered the kingpin bearings in my 90 NA 300 were rough and needed replacing. After finally getting the proper bearings I found out that the new lower kingpin bearing has about .030 inches of side-to-side play. I tested the side which has not had the bearings replaced, and there is only .008 inches of play. I have double checked my torque settings, checked the part numbers, and checked the entire assembly to make something was not left out. I am at a loss to explain this "slop" in the kingpin. The play is not between the kingpin and the bearing, nor the bearing and the housing; it is in the actual bearing itself. Since the lower bearing is an angular contact type, it depends on a certain amount of pre-load to tighten up and function properly. To the best of my knowledge, this is what is lacking with my new bearings, but I have no idea how or why. Dimensionally, the new bearings are identical to the old ones....EXCEPT for the new bearing shoulders, they are about 1.5mm wide compared to the 3mm shoulders on the old ones. Could something as minor as that be my problem? Any and all suggestions are welcome.
