Message This is definitely the place for the best information on the 90-96 Z. Everything you asked about has been discussed many times and is available through SEARCH. The first thing you need to do is spend a while browsing through the FAQ pages. The Z FAQ lists many of the most common issues and how to fix them. The Auto FAQ pages are member posted how-to's on just about everything.

I recommend you avoid local parts stores for anything other than basic supplies. There are several very reputable vendors you can purchase from online that specialize in our vehicle. My first choice would be Coz at Concept Z ([ www.czp.us ]).

Regarding your questions:

Oil on the outside of the spark plug - leaking PCV valve or valve cover gasket.

Oil on the plug tip - plug not firing and fouled or possibly bad rings. You might not see smoke if the plug is not firing. Do separate searches for "balance test" and "compression check" for details on how to find a bad cylinder.

Fuel smell in the exhaust - misfiring cylinder passing unburnt fuel or a generally rich fuel condition. Again, do a balance test to determine a misfiring cylinder. Search for "6 P's" and check out the FAQ pages for general maintenance issues.

Bad injector - would cause the misfire you mentioned. Early Zs used different injectors than newer Zs and are highly succeptable to failure. This has been attributed to ethanol fuel additives and possible electrolysis. This is one of the most discussed/argued Z topics. Search for "early injector failure" and "injector ohm test" for more info.

For the 91 TT, the correct injector is 370cc with a purple top and blue dot. Be careful, 555cc injectors look identical but without the dot. These will not work without a chip upgrade. I recommend getting your injectors from Coz, although they can sometimes be found on the classifieds page. If you are willing to spend the money, converting to new style injectors is a good investment to avoid continued problems. Search for "300 degree fuel rail" for info on the best option.

The correct spark plug for the TT is a unique item made by NGK specifically for this car. It is the platinum plug NGK PRF6B-11B. It has a non-standard length designed for the TT combustion chamber. This has also been argued over and over, with newbies claiming others are better. Unless you are running very high boost, this is the correct plug to avoid poor performance. Search "PRF6B-11B" for much discussion.

Finally, there are several members in Ohio who may be able to help you. Check out the members page and directory search. There are probably some Z clubs in the area as well.

Good luck!
