How do you know you're losing fuel pressure?

pressure reads 40+ when first starting then starts dropping to around 20 then jumps all over the place, then car dies. I am not familiar with pressurizing the fuel rail to check for leaks. What is the procedure for that?

You connect an air compressor to one end of the rail
