Before you pull the plenum I'd make sure you've identified where the smoke is coming from. If it's coming from a turbo or exhaust leak then pulling the plenum won't help you fix it.However, If you decide to pull the plenum, review the tutorial in the FAQ> AutoFAQ by Nytwolf if you haven't already. If you decide to do it, you need to allow 12 to 14 hours over a couple days doing it your first time. Valve covers will add another 2 or so hours the first time. Getting the exhaust covers off sometimes is tricky to get them to clear the EGR tube. Also replace the rear and side PCV hoses as well as the AAC air hose too, and coolant/fuel hoses too so you can save time and simply cut the old ones off. Make notes, label things, and take pics if you need to help you remember where things go. Essential tools needed: Long 45° needle nose pliers for getting to hose clamps in awkward positions, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm socket and ratchet (10mm nutdriver helps speed things up), 8mm gear wrench flex head ratcheting wrench for removing EGR bolts, Phillips Head screw driver. Good luck.
