The VTC spring that goes under the front cover serves only one purpose, and that is to pre-load the sprocket when the VTC is deactivated. There is about 0.010" internal clearance in the sprockets and there is pressurized oil that is fed to them. The VTC operates when the oil flow is stopped and pressure builds in the sprockets causing them to advance 10° (20° crankshaft). Without the VTC spring, this pressure surge would cause the sprocket to move fore and aft within that clearance window, the VTC spring simply keeps the sprocket pre-loaded when the oil is being bled off so when the VTC activates and pressure builds, there isn't a sudden snap (so to speak) of the clearance being taken up.
