There should be no 'bumps' and the solder should flow easily and coat the wire evenly if properly heated. You should hold the iron to the back side of the exposed wire, then touch the solder to the front side of the wire. The solder should melt and spread with no additional effort. If not, the solder iron is not hot enough, the tip is too small, or the solder is the wrong type. Yours might be ok, it's hard to tell from the picture, but it does appear that the joint is 'cold' (i.e. brittle). The splice technique looks good though and should promote good solder flow if properly heated. Ted
