In Reply To maybe that's why you're not supposed to tune with them. lol. (n/m) posted by Bernie on June 18, 2002 at 08:55 AM

Message if you run lean, you will see it. If you run in the middle, you will see it, but as far as richness goes, it will peg up to about 0.75 volts and stay there, no matter how much richer you run it. But, if you run it too rich, you will backfire and you will see smoke out the back.

I am by no means saying that wideband O2's have no place. All that I am saying is that you dont have to have them to get a decent tune. Just run it a bit on the rich side to be safe until you can get your butt on a dyno. :)

Another thing about mixtures is that creating a baseline set of maps to use it kinda funny. Once you get the mixtures about right across the load and RPM bands, then you start bumping up the timing a little. You WILL feel the increase in power even with just 2 degrees more timing. But the limiting factor becomes detonation. However, say you get it to 22 degrees and it only slightly pings at 6500RPM, you can go in the fuel map and just run it a little richer at that one point and rerun to see if it eliminated the detonation. If it does, you are good to go. This obviously is a very simplified tuning procedure and the actual dyno tune will be much more elaborate if you do it right, but this is basically how it is done.
