2 years is a long time for that kind of work. And no communication for 4 months now? I would be planning for the worst and hoping for the best- perhaps legal recourse, getting a truck and trailer to go pick it up (not knowing what condition it's in). Have receipts and communications ready to back it up.
If you're close enough, drop by with the "I just wanted to see how it's coming along" story. That may get him moving if he knows you will just show up. At least then you will know first hand where things are at with the job and will know better on how to proceed.
