Message	Mike Smith says that the problem isn't the shaft bearing but the gears getting glazed. If nothing else I would replace the bearing and see how it goes. Does the problem actually go away or does replacing the bearing not change anything. That might at least isolate the issue to the source of the noise. I don't have any details on the Merlin kit - I believe that its a new crate trans.
