Message As soon as there is play from the decades old rubber, it degrades shift quality because the entire shifter assembly is able to flex out of perfect alignment, especially under hard/fast shifting. Replacing stock shifter bracket bushings with aftermarket ones might be another option, not sure if I've ever seen that done before.
