But is it really necessary? As per your own statement, the steering ratios "vary slightly" between the TT and NA, AND over the years. What that suggests to me is perhaps the differences are interchangeable and would not be noticed, except maybe by a professional racer or an obsessive compulsive driver. I have no idea what the steering ratios are for our cars, but are we talking about differences that are noticeable in daily driving? Is someone going to get an exchange and not a rebuild and notice the difference? I believe the difference between a 15:1 and a 20:1 steering ratio might be noticeable. Fifteen to one means for every 15 degree turn of the steering wheel, the front wheels turn one degree. In that comparison, for round numbers, to get a two degree turn at the front wheel would take thirty degrees of steering wheel turn with a 15:1 rack ratio, and forty degrees of steering wheel turn with the 20:1 rack. That is a difference of ten degrees more steering wheel turn for the 20:1 rack, or if you like percentages, 33.3% more steering wheel turn (with less effort) compared to the 15:1 rack. But when you wrote “vary slightly” I was wondering if the difference was much smaller, such as 15:1 to 16:1, would it even be noticeable? I don’t know the answer. I took a quick glance at Rock Auto and their part number for the rack and pinion is the same for the z32 TT and NA (I only checked 1995, my year), suggesting the racks are interchangeable.
