if I had to guess, it probably came from an observation where someone had some noisy gears and when they replaced the front VTC springs with new OE springs, the noise went away for awhile. This could then be interpreted that the original springs were "worn out" and a stronger spring could be the perfect fix. However, there was another unaccounted variable in this scenario and that was the air introduced into the VTC when the cover was removed and some oil drained out. In my opinion, this air takes some time to bleed out because when the engine is running, the centrifugal force on the oil pushes it outward within the VTC and the air forms a pocket in the center of rotation where there are few places for it to bleed out. This air, while it remains, acts as a compressible cushion that dampens the noise - but when it is finally bled away, the noise always comes back.
