The Quaife is definitely not a VLSD, it's gear driven. Any LSD is going to be "limited" slip, not non-existent slip. So a lifted wheel is still going to spin some, but under control, and the planted wheel will get more torque bias than an open diff where it gets none. A viscous LSD is going to be worse in that regard, so you're right there, but on the street it's a lot easier on the drivetrain and your back. The differences you mention sound more like open vs. 2-way vs. 1.5-way. If you want the most consistent control getting sideways, it seems like a 2-way makes more sense since it's fully controlled whether accelerating or decelerating. I've heard that clutch types are better for this as well, but I've got no direct experience.
