As you get to the "best of the best", price doesn't increase linearly. Minor things that make it even slightly less desirable (IE - an auto transmission) will make more buyers say "I'll wait for a manual" and bow out earlier, thus limiting how high the price spikes during the auction. Yes I think this was a bit of an outlier given other sales, but that's what happens when you car is "the perfect one" for two different bidders with deep pockets. It does set precedent though, which will make bidders on other auctions think that they might NOT be able to get a better deal in the future and thus be willing to bid more than they would previously.
